An Unexpected Ascent: From the Classroom to the Cockpit

Adebanke’s path to the cockpit was anything but traditional. With a solid academic foundation—a Bachelor’s degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and an MSc in International Globalization from the University of Leicester—she initially envisioned a career in public health. While working as an Aviation Health Trainer for a popular UAE airline, her life took an unforeseen turn.

“To be honest, my initial response was a blend of anxiety and thrill,” Adebanke recalls of the moment a training pilot encouraged her to take an introductory flight. “Until then, my life revolved around numbers, checklists, and health protocols. I was the one ensuring others were fit to fly, not the one strapped in the cockpit seat.”

That single moment of curiosity transformed her career trajectory. “I agreed before I could convince myself otherwise,” she says, noting that the flight was the turning point where aviation shifted from a field she supported from the sidelines to the one she was destined to master.

A Childhood Fascination Turned Reality

The spark for aviation had always been there, hidden in the pages of encyclopedias and the vastness of the world atlas. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve been captivated by spinning the world atlas, exploring encyclopedias about various places, and watching planes soar above my home,” she shares.

Today, as an Aircraft Commander on the Boeing 737-NG/MAX for a major U.S. legacy carrier, that childhood wonder remains intact. “Particularly during sunrise or sunset takeoffs and landings, or on clear night flights, I feel that same awe I had as a child.”

Honoring Roots: The DTN@100 Diaspora Nigerian Award

Recently, Adebanke was honored with the DTN@100 Diaspora Nigerian Award during the centenary celebration of the Daily Times of Nigeria. For her, the recognition is deeply personal. “It means more to me than a title or a moment of applause; it’s a reminder that home never really leaves you, no matter how far you’ve flown,” she says.

She views the award not as a personal triumph, but as a collective victory for the Nigerian diaspora. “This award belongs to every Nigerian in the diaspora working quietly, showing up daily, and carrying our culture and excellence into spaces we were once told we didn’t belong.”

Representation: Flying for More Than Just a Destination

Adebanke’s career is defined by her trailblazing status as the first Nigerian female Captain at a U.S. legacy airline and the first Black female pilot to fly the Boeing 747 Dreamlifter. Yet, her proudest moments are rooted in the impact she has on those watching from the ground.

“Flying the Dreamlifter and the 737 has always been the dream, but sitting in that seat means more when you know people are watching who see themselves in you,” she explains. Reflecting on recognitions from the Nigeria in Diaspora Commission and the NAPAC Foundation, she adds, “This job was never just about getting people from point A to point B. It’s about representation, about showing the next generation what’s possible.”

A Day in the Life of an Aircraft Commander

Leading a crew and ensuring the safety of hundreds requires immense discipline. Adebanke’s day begins long before boarding, with weather analysis, flight planning, and maintenance reviews.

“From the moment I step on board, I’m not just flying a plane; I’m leading a crew and holding the safety of everyone on it,” she says. While the public sees the glamour of travel, she highlights the rigorous reality: the layovers, the time zones, and the mental stamina required to remain sharp on every leg. “What I love most about being a captain is the responsibility entrusted to me. Earning that trust every single flight never gets old.”

Mentoring the Next Generation: “Find Your Giant”

For young girls and those from underrepresented backgrounds, Adebanke is a vocal advocate and mentor. Her advice is direct and actionable: “Aviation can feel like a closed door when you don’t see many people who look like you in the cockpit. I want girls to know the industry needs you precisely because your perspective is different.”

She encourages aspiring pilots to get curious, find mentors, and take an introductory flight. “The sky doesn’t check who’s flying it. It just asks that you’re ready,” she says, offering her signature mantra: “Find your GIANT & Be a GIANT.”

Looking Ahead: The Path to Widebody Command

While she currently commands the 737, Adebanke has her sights set on the future. Her goal is to upgrade to a widebody captain seat, specifically on the 777 or 787, to fly international routes.

“I’m using this time to build the judgment and leadership habits that make a good widebody captain,” she explains. She remains active in organizations like OBAP, Women in Aviation, and Sisters of the Skies, ensuring that her journey continues to pave the way for others.

Beauty at 30,000 Feet: The Skincare Routine

For those curious about how she maintains her glow despite the harsh, dry environment of the flight deck, Adebanke treats skincare as a discipline. “Flying this frequently forces discipline with skincare; it’s less about vanity and more about damage control,” she notes.

Her routine is a mix of internal hydration—drinking water religiously—and external protection, including broad-spectrum SPF 30+ even in the cockpit, hydrating mists, and a consistent morning and night regimen featuring Vitamin C and retinol. “Glowing skin in my 40s is about habits I formed in my 30s,” she shares, emphasizing the importance of sleep and never sleeping in makeup.

A Legacy of Courage

Captain Adebanke’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of community. By navigating the skies with precision and grace, she is not just an aviator; she is an architect of change. As she continues to thrive, her story serves as a reminder that with courage, preparation, and a commitment to uplifting others, the sky is not a limit—it is a workplace accessible to all.
